AEROSPACE INSPECTION INDUSTRY
The aerospace inspection industry encompasses a wide range of aircraft in two very different sectors, manufacturing and maintenance. In the manufacturing sector, the inspections are geared toward finding discontinuities associated with creating and manufacturing finished parts. The inspections are geared toward finding service-induced flaws like fatigue cracking, corrosion, or damage assessment in the maintenance sector. Typically, the aerospace manufacturing and maintenance sectors have very different requirements for the certification of NDT personnel and the inspection of parts and components.
AEROSPACE MANUFACTURING
Performing Nondestructive Testing in the manufacturing sector typically requires personnel to be certified IAW, the National Aerospace Standard (NAS) 410. For personnel to get certified in IAW NAS 410, a company needs to establish a Written Practice approved by a NAS 410 certified Level 3. This written Practice is one essential pillar of the NDT program. It defines how the company plans to train, qualify, certify, and verify proficiency in each NDT method.
Another essential pillar of an NDT program is the inspection system. The inspection system comprises of everything needed to perform and document inspections. Generally, inspections during the manufacturing stage are required to be performed IAW, a company-specific procedure. These procedures are developed from a general industry standard or manufacturer-specific specification. Generally, any component that is part of the structure or deals with flight safety is inspected during manufacturing.
AEROSPACE MAINTENANCE
Performing Nondestructive Testing in the maintenance sector requires personnel to be certified in IAW NAS 410 or other aerospace industry specifications like Air Transport Association of America, Inc. (ATA) Specification 105. In some cases, an inspector may alternatively hold an Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) or Technical Inspector (TI) certification to perform inspections. The maintenance sector also requires companies to establish a Written Practice approved by a certified Level 3.
Inspections performed during the maintenance stage are also done IAW a company-specific procedure or, alternatively, a specific aircraft maintenance manual. When inspecting to an aircraft maintenance manual, a company-specific procedure may not be necessary. Aircraft maintenance manuals must be reviewed carefully to ensure all required personnel certifications, equipment, and inspection techniques are followed.
AEROSPACE AUDITING
Whether you work in the aerospace manufacturing or maintenance sectors, you will be subject to audits! These audits can be self-imposed internal audits or be from an external entity. An outside entity performs external audits to verify compliance with quality, code, contractual or other requirements. These audits can be initiated by your customers, government organizations like the FAA, prime aviation manufacturers like Boeing, or other auditing agencies like the Performance Review Institute, who administers Nadcap audits. Internal audits of the company’s processes and procedures should be audited regularly. In the case of external audits, regular internal auditing and audit preparation is essential to achieving an excellent audit result.
